Feeding the masses · Kids

Sour Dough

After much urging from the hubby, we decided to make sour dough!  We do have 1 packet of yeast in the cabinet mind you but, he insisted we try making a sour dough starter.  The big girls were all too eager to help so I put them to work.

We infused blueberries in water for 24 hours and then strained them out.  The purple water became our first additive.  Our second was greek vanilla yogurt and, the third was honey and water (1 tablespoon of honey stirred in 50 ml of water).

Blueberries infusing!

Each bowl was filled with 100 g of flour and then we added 50 ml’s from each of the additives (3 additives, 3 separate bowls).  We combined the ingredients, put them each in a mason jar with plastic wrap over the mouth of the jar and let them sit for 48 hours.

After 48 hours the honey and the blueberry were the only two that were active (fermenting/creating yeast from the sugar) so, we added another 100g of flour and 50 ml of water to both active batches.

After 48 hours

After 12 hours we “fed” them, as my girls say with the 100g of flour and 50 ml of water.  Today marks day 7 since we first started, and they are almost ready!  Check back in a few days with the latest pictures and updates.

*We are using kitchen grade scales.

*The flour I had on hand was all purpose.

*The Greek yogurt I used was great value (Walmart’s brand).

*The blueberries were frozen blueberries.

*We have kept the batches on the counter because we are feeding them each day.

*There is something to be said about the smell of not “ready” sour dough. (I have attached the link to the article where you can read more about the smells and the bacteria that is present in the dough).

**This activity is something that for years to come, I will be thanking my husband for.  It has allowed time for our big girls and I to bond and it has been incredible.  The “feedings” probably take 5 minutes but, its 5 minutes that is set aside for just us.  Its hard to juggle 6 kids and make sure that each one has their time with me where they get to  feel individually special.  SOO….My few words of advice today is that right now, we have nothing but time.  Put away the phone and the other electronics and thoughtfully hang out with each of your kids by themselves.  Ask them what they would like to do and do it (within reason …because I know right now my 5-year-old would say he would want to go to the jungle to hunt Dinos) LEAVE THE POOR DINOS ALONE!  I hope you guys get to try this out and maybe well be baking together soon!

s’mores

It’s rainy and chilly where we are right now.  It is somewhat upsetting because a few of us got sun burnt yesterday, I thought we were done with the cold.  So, I have spent the better part of today coming up with activities and games so that everyone would get along and play nice together.  I AM EXHAUSTED!  I gave in and handed out phones, tablets and the remote.  On the plus side, I got to make a quick snack for them, and I think I’ll have enough time to tell you about it. (Fingers crossed).  On my last Walmart pickup order, I made sure graham crackers, chocolate and mallows were in my cart.  As a side note, if you have not done a grocery pickup, you are missing out.  The snack today is oven s’mores.  If you have not done this, you must try.  I am totally the s’mores by the fire type of gal but, this is a great alternative and you can “feed the masses”.  I placed the mallows on one graham cracker and the chocolate on the other on a cookie sheet, turned broil on and let those mallows get a nice light brown.  It took me less than 10 minutes to prep, cook and hand out.  WINNING!  I must warn you, the broil setting is serious business, those babies will burn if you don’t watch them.  Also, every part of that smore will be scorching hot so, give it a minute or two to cool before eating them….I mean before you give them to your littles to consume.

Thank you!

There are hard-working folks around the world and thanks to technology, we can get glimpses of what their days are like on the homestead. Our family can make our dreams a reality of doing things like; using every part of the animal after a hunt, preserving the home-grown harvest and creating spectacular things with very few ingredients just like them. Those people inspire us to do just what I said in my welcome post; to “live off our land”. We are not there yet but, we are getting closer each day!

Feeding the Masses

With SIX growing children 12 and under, the answer to the age old question of, “What’s for dinner?” can be a long drawn out answer. Most of the time “Whats for dinner”, is some sort of meat with some kind of starch and a veggie but, who wants to guess how often I forget to take the meat out of the freezer? If I can do this, so can you. We need to rally together and help each other out and PS. There is solution to your frozen chicken breasts, all is not lost! I will fill up this blog with tips, tricks and recipes to “feed the masses”.

Happy Easter!

Well look at that, I said I would post before the weekend was over and it’s happening! I think this is going to be the start of a wonderful relationship. I still haven’t figured out my layouts and am sorry for the boring white background and lack of pictures. Tomorrow starts spring break, so no lesson plans for the mom who lacks a teaching degree. Can I get a whoop whoop?  Maybe, it will mean that the kids will play outside all week and I will have the time to bedazzle my page! Who is laughing at me right now?  Come on Crystal, mom’s do not have free time, especially during the day.  Oh well, a girl can dream right?

Hopefully, everyone has enjoyed their first social distancing Easter. In our house, all members of the family must be awake for the festivities to begin.  Our youngest, Tyler was the last of our children to wake up so, in true fashion; as he was slowly opening those beautiful baby blues, the others were throwing their shoes on, ready to go get eggs. We watched the church sermon live, on the computer following the hunt. Three of us were quiet and listening…life with toddlers, I think I’ll call that a win! As I was driving to the church to pick up our individual bags of bread dipped in juice for communion, I was contemplating on what topic I would choose to write about. I have so many thoughts and want to tell you every single one but, I don’t want to confuse you or, end up being the weird girl who talks too much.

The word “unity” popped into my head and I knew that was the perfect word for today.  The pastor broke the loaf of bread and dipped the bread into the cup.  As we know, the bread signifies the body of Christ and the juice or wine, the blood of Christ in which, he gave for us all. All, being unified by Christ or, one with Christ or, together with Christ. UNITY.  Even though we did not gather with our church family today, we received communion with the bread and juice from one unified loaf.  UNITY.  My social media feed was filled with screen shots of zoom family gatherings and photos of families all dressed up to go nowhere. UNITY.  The past few weeks I have seen communities provide meals, masks, gifts and words of encouragement to essential personnel and healthcare staff. UNITY.  There are those who have fallen ill or have succumbed to this terrible virus and what do we see?  People rallying together to help the families in any way they can.  UNITY.  The recommendations/ requirements that have been enforced with quarantine has put us in a place where we are told to stay home.  If home consists of a mom and six kids to you or it means that you are by yourself, we are all doing it together.  UNITY.    I know right now, is a difficult time for our world.  Don’t block out those who may have different views from you for, we are certainly stronger and happier together.  UNITY.

Stay tuned for my next post tomorrow as I will be creating a new sub-page!!!  HINT….We are doing an experiment with; flour, honey, water and time…. Can you guess???  Good night my friends!

Love,

Ce

My First Blog Post

First post jitters……

Hi everyone!

~I created the user name and received the confirmation link for my blog but, it took me months to hit confirm. I was scared, nervous, excited and all of the describing words that I am teaching my first grader while on this COVID break to actually start my blogging journey. Soooo….as I sit here awkwardly staring at my screen like a girl and her first crush on a parent chaperoned date, I will break the ice by introducing myself. (Just to make sure you really understand how I am feeling, I am in and out of sweating and having chills, ha). I’ve got to get the jitters under control, I digress. My name is Crystal, those who know me best, call me Ce. I am in my mid 30’s, have six children, an adoring husband and a wonderful life! WAIT!!! Let me start over, I am 34, I will be 35 in July, (warning: I celebrate the whole month and I count down the months until it’s my birthday just like a 9 year old about to be double digits!) All, six children are from my husbands sperm , my eggs and my body, just so we can get the questions out of the way now. No, they are not his and hers. No, we didn’t adopt them. No, I did not have a surrogate and for the people in the back, that means that; Yes, they all came from me :), I don’t know the rules, can I insert a smiley face? It would seem that four is the starting point where these odd questions come into play. This is where I am going to leave you, I know cliffhanger right????? I feel like if I keep typing I won’t stop so, I’ll bid you adieu until my next post. I’ll be playing around with the layouts and I will post again before the weekend is over! Leave a comment if you want and thanks for stopping by San Diego….(I promise that won’t be my tag line).

Love,

Ce
